The Merck Serono Biotech Center (MSBC) in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland, is one of seven sites operated by Biotech Manufacturing & Process Development. This highly specialized group focuses on the production of Merck Serono biotech products for clinical trials and commercial phases as well as the development of high-performance processes. This site has particular expertise in mammalian cell technologies at both small and medium scale, using many different technology platforms.
The MSBC is one of the largest and most technologically advanced biotech centers in the world. Inaugurated in 1999, the site currently produces the active ingredient for Merck Serono's multiple sclerosis treatment, Rebif® (interferon beta-1a). An expansion project of around EUR 350 million is currently being completed to increase the manufacturing capacity of the plant to allow for production of additional medicines, including the targeted cancer therapy Erbitux® (cetuximab) by 2012.
